Drowning Statistics
It takes as little as 2 inches of water and 2 seconds for a child to drown..
 Do you own a Pool?,
 Do you have kids?
 Do your Neighbors have kids?
 Who is watching them?
"it's just what I needed"
A young Brisbane mother of 2 children under 5 years.
Do I need a pool alarm or 2nd level of swimming pool protection. you ask, well the statistics are frightening, here are the figures:
Drowning Statistics in backyard pools.
The number three greatest risk for American children is drowning.
Each year approximately 253,000 people world-wide drown in pools, beaches or other bodies of water. With a high portion of these under the age of 5.
In the United States alone each year in excess of 1800 people drown in swimming pools and 300 of these are children under the age of 5 (toddlers, babies, and kids). This breaks down into approximately 1 drowning every 2 months per state. In Queensland, Australia it is even higher at approximately 1 drowning per 1 1/2 months (averaged over the last 10 years, after pool fences were made compulsory)
For ages under 14 years old drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death.
Drowning and near drowning's tend to occur when the children are in familiar surrounds and are being supervised by a parent.
The drowning's occurred during short lapses in supervision e.g.. A 5-minute break to make a cup of coffee or visit the toilet.
Flotation devices do not protect children.
Nearly 70% of all children that suffered from submersion were not expected to be at, near or in the pool yet they were found in the water.
65% of the drowning incidents happen in the pool owned by the child's family.
Drowning's and near drowning's even occur in pools with perimeter fencing and gate alarms.
POOL SAFETY ALARMS COMPARISON
Tools help, but do not replace Parental supervision
Fences
Install a fence or wall completely around the pool.
The fence should be at least 4 foot high (1.2metres) and should have no hand or foothold to allow a young child to climb.
The fence should not be made of chain link or square mesh material as this allows climbing foot holds for toddlers.
The fence gates should be self-closing and self-latching. The hinges must not allow the gate to stay open.
The gate latch should be located at the top of the gate/gate post in order to prevent easy access by unsupervised children.
Oh and the gate should never be propped open for any reason at all
How are your Neighbors fences, can anyone climb over or through them?

Gate Alarms
Gate Alarms come in many different sizes and are designed for outdoor use.
They mount on your gate with two magnetic switches.
If the gate is opened the switches electrical field is broken and an alarm will sound.
Unless an override button has been pressed which will allow an adult to pass through.
These alarms will generally fit any type of gate or fence and can even be used in areas other than pool gates e.g.. Front gate or side gate to houses etc.
The disadvantages are they only activate when the pool gate is opened and they are only battery powered.
Door Alarms
If the house forms a perimeter or part of the perimeter to the pool fencing that the doors should have alarms that protect unexpected openings.
This alarm should be in the form of an audible sound when the door is opened. The alarms can be turned on generally by a key or keypad.
Warning: They can also be turned off by a key or keypad and unintentionally left inactivated.
However, if you have a doggie door these alarms will not work for you as children can crawl though doggie doors.
Window Alarms
If the house forms a perimeter or part of the perimeter to the pool fencing that the windows should have alarms that protect unexpected openings.
This alarm should be in the form of an audible sound when the window is opened.
 These alarms can be turned on generally by a key or keypad.;
Warning: They can also be turned off by a key or keypad and unintentionally left inactivated. Unfortunately that means they can be accidentally left off at critical times
Perimeter Pool Alarm
These are generally either laser or infrared type of alarms.
They work by creating a beam around the perimeter of the pool so that when the pool perimeter beam is broken the alarm will activate.
These alarm beams are generally placed 12-24 inches above ground level. The owner can adjust the beam to suit their toddler.
However if these beams are adjusted to suit their children they may not suit someone else's child who may enter the pool area
These alarms are the most expensive of any alarm system on the market but they provide full perimeter protection at a set height.
